Grand Prix

The Team Cherwell Grand Prix takes place every year.

The club will vote to decide on which races will feature in the events list and it will include a variety of distances as well as both pool and open water swims. It’s a chance for all Team Cherwell members to get competitive and awards are given out at the end of each year to the lucky winners.

To qualify for the Grand Prix you need to enter at least three races, one of which can be a Wildcard Entry.

Team Cherwell Grand Prix 2023

In 2023 we are continuing the mix of free distance for swim, bike and run with races. As for last year we have a list of named races as well as two wildcard (multisport options).  Please remember that the grand prix is designed to be a fun competition between Team Cherwell members. Through the GP we would like to encourage all members, particularly those new to triathlon to compete. As such the rules are intended to be inclusive and easy to follow, allowing the most people to compete rather than being restrictive.  Just takes you all to get involved – enter those races, sign up for the time trials, do a Parkrun, get in the pool/lake and make sure you let everyone know what you’re doing and when – always good to get a crowd out.

Free run / bike / swim

Free events are where the competitor can choose their own route and complete at any point, evidence is provided through sharing of data file (e.g. link to Strava activity or data file sent to the scorer). To promote competition we are asking competitors to submit their evidence in a timely fashion so that the results update throughout the season – there will be a window at the end of each month where results will be collated and updated on the scoresheet.

Scoring

Will be done as per the standard GP rules. In the event of a dispute over the scoring the committee will make the final decision.

NOTE: You may submit multiple entries for each category throughout the season, only the best result will be counted.

Team Cherwell Grand Prix Rules

The grand prix is designed to be a fun competition between Team Cherwell members. Through the GP we would like to encourage all members, particularly those new to triathlon to compete. As such the rules are intended to be inclusive and easy to follow, allowing the most people to compete rather than being restrictive.

Race Selection

Each year the committee will select a series of races to be included in the grand prix. The committee will endeavor to get feedback from the club to ensure popular races are selected.

Wildcard race

The wildcard race allows each individual to include in their score one race that is not on the grand prix list. The requirements for a race to be used as a wildcard race are:

1. The race must be a multisport race;

The race does not have to be a triathlon, other multisport races are allowed. However, single sport races are not allowed.

2. A wildcard race must be completed (and the scorer notified) 6 weeks before the awards dinner and after the previous awards dinner;

The wildcard race should be from the same season as the races selected by the committee. Also to allow for trophies to be engraved etc. we need to finalize the results about 6 weeks before the awards dinner.

Free run / bike

3. The route must not have any significant height loss between start and finish;
4. The total distance must be the same or greater than the event distance (exception is Parkrun and Banbury Star TTs where the official times only will be accepted);
5. The evidence must be provided to the scorer by the end of the month in which the event took place;

Free Swim

6. The swim distance must be available (either based on lengths in a pool, or open water start / finish points);
7. The total distance must be the same or greater than the event distance;
8. The evidence must be provided to the scorer by the end of the month in which the event took place;

Team Relay

The team relay is a popular and fun race where you get race with your fellow Team Cherwell members. However, given that results are per team rather than per individual it cannot be scored in the same way as other races.

9. All Team Cherwell relay team members will get 15 points added to their score.

Scoring

The aim behind the scoring of races is to try to give consistent scores across all races for the same performance. This is impossible to achieve based on the difference in standard between races targeted at first timers (e.g. Blenheim) and those with qualification slots available (e.g. ITU/ETU age group qualifiers or Ironman).

  • Individual score is calculated as 40th percentile time / individual time * 100
  • To find the person at the 40th percentile only people who finished the race are considered.

As an example, let’s consider a race with 105 competitors, of which 5 either didn’t start the race or didn’t finish the race.

The 40th percentile is the person who finished in position 40. Let’s consider the following two Team Cherwell members (A and B):

A – 1hr10
40th person – 1hr20
B – 1hr 40

Member A’s score is 80 / 70 *100 = 114.29
Member B’s score is 80 / 100 * 100 = 80

By calculating the scores based on the 40th percentile time rather than the winner’s time we avoid devaluing races where a few exceptionally good athletes are competing.

10. Scores for anyone who races with Team Cherwell as their club will be calculated when the races are completed.
11. Individuals are responsible for ensuring their result is scored correctly.

The scorer will do best efforts to ensure that the results are accurate. However, it is easy to miss members who are competing particularly those who race under other team names. Also, we all make mistakes. Please check your results and your scores and if you have any questions or concerns let the scorer know.

Trophies

Overall Male / Female Winner

These trophies go to the individual who has obtained the most overall points for the grand prix over the season (including Team Relay and Wildcard races).

12. Scores are calculated as the total for all Grand Prix races over the season (including Team Relay and Wildcard).
13. Trophies are awarded to the highest scoring male and female.

Category Trophies

The category trophies are awarded to the individual in each category that has the highest score across their top 3 races (plus team relay score if applicable).

14. Score is calculated as the total points across the top three races plus the 15 points from Team Relay.
15. One of the races used in the top three must include an open water swim.
16. Only individuals with three races will be eligible for the trophies.
17. Trophies are awarded to the individual with the highest score in each category.
18. Individuals are responsible for ensuring they are listed in the correct category on the results.
