Milton Keynes Marathon – Race Report

Milton Keynes Marathon: May 1st 2017.

After years of a reoccurring IT band injuries and physio visits, I had concluded the full marathon experience would never pan out for me. Preparation and training hampered to only 14 miles, my hope of completing the Milton Keynes marathon was now a fools hope….or so I thought!

Race day was here and upon arrival at a rather overcast but dry Stadium MK I was immediately swept up by the carnival atmosphere. Club vests a plenty, equal in number to superhero outfits and hoards of supporters and well-wishers.

The start was announced with an explosion of ticker tape and air horn. I was feeling good and buoyed on by the crowd (which included Andy and Michelle from Harriers) my knee was holding out, aided by an arsenal of Nurofen (other brands are available).

The 14-mile marker and into uncharted waters….15,16,17 I was in manageable pain.  ‘Flat’ they said prior to the race…..’hardly a hill’ they said…..don’t believe a word of it. The sneaky inclines kept coming as the race continued.

By mile 20 I was starting to feel sorry for myself until rounding a corner to see my niece, nephew and sister waving a Go Uncle Paul banner!

And so it was; after a brief stop to grab booster hugs from the family and jelly babies, I laboured to the finish line with my wingman Dave.

A well-organised event, awesome stadium finish, lively crowd, cool medal……I loved it and would recommend the race to anyone next year. Just don’t listen to anyone who says it’s a flat!

Berlin anyone?
