Team Cherwell Triathlon Club Launches Grand Prix 2026 in Style

The Radley College Sprint Triathlon, also known as the Good Friday Tri, marked the exciting start of Team Cherwell Triathlon Club’s 2026 Grand Prix season.

Set within an impressive 800-acre campus of lakes, parkland, and historic buildings, the venue provided a stunning countryside backdrop for the event. A strong turnout of 26 Team Cherwell members took to the course, facing challenging conditions including wind and cold temperatures. Despite a few thrills and spills, lost shoes, and wrong turns, the day was filled with smiles, determination and outstanding performances.

The event highlighted the club’s inclusive and supportive spirit. Registered blind athlete Steve Parnell and his guide Andy Bucher competed, demonstrating teamwork and resilience. It was also fantastic to see athletes returning to racing following long-term injuries or illness, marking important personal milestones in their recovery journeys.

Team Cherwell’s women delivered exceptional results, with five athletes finishing in the top ten. Amy Cox achieved the fastest bike and run splits of the day, while Bridget Gould recorded the fastest swim.

A special mention goes to Helen Burton, who completed her first-ever triathlon shortly after joining the club, flying over the finish line! Reflecting on her achievement, Helen said:

“The triathlon felt like a victory lap after all the hard work it took to get there. I wouldn’t have made it without the support of the club, the coaches, my fellow athletes and especially those who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”

Club Chairman Alex Birch said:
“We’re proud to see new members stepping up to complete their first triathlon. Our club is all about building confidence and providing support every step of the way. Helen, you are a triathlete!”

The men’s field also produced impressive performances. Nick Donkin recorded the fastest swim, Malc Rose delivered the fastest bike leg and secured first place in his age group and Stuart Young clocked the quickest run split.

The event was a fantastic start to the season, filled with encouragement, camaraderie and plenty of laughter along the way.
